Can't change entity type

I have been working on cleaning up some entities since we updated to 1.7.3, and if I try to change them from one type to another ("individual" to "artist," which is a subtype of "individual"), I get this error:

Could not set type to : '0' is not valid choice for Status

What gives, and how do I resolve this?
(Changing object types works without incident.)

  • Edit: I can change from individual to culture, and then to artist, but I cannot change from a type to a subtype.
  • For historical reasons (i.e. the explanation is dumb) status values are stored in the database using the "item value" field value, rather than an ID. This means if you edit the status values you can end up with a situation where existing records have status values that are no longer defined, and if they're not defined you won't be able to save changes.

I'd suggest you go into the status list in "Lists & Vocabularies" and confirm that there is an entry with item value = 0. If there isn't create one.
