repairing broken CA installation

Hello list,

This is hardly a question that I expect to be answered with a simple, ready to apply answer. The problem lies in a broken CA installation (I assume it was broken by a failed upgrade) which I was asked to repair. I can access and mirror the data in the MySQL database and media files, but all I can see is a login screen. Have you ever found yourself in such situation? Can you recommend any scenario for tackling such problem? Any hints welcome.
