Pawtucket sort browse results by date - not sorting correctly

When browsing objects and sorting results by date, the order of objects is incorrect. We have several date types, some objects with dates of no set type, and some objects with no associated date. I don't think we have any objects that have multiple dates. Date formats are primarily yyyy or month yyyy. Given the variety of date configurations, how is Pawtucket trying handle this sort?

Which conf files should I be looking at to 'sort out' this problem? The wiki suggests: "Custom search result sort options - You can configure Pawtucket to sort search/browse results by the attributes of your choice by setting the result_sort_options_for_ in app.conf." However, I don't see this phrase in either theme-level or pawtucket-level app.conf files.
