import media as primary

Is there a way to set imported media to primary representation? I'm in the process of upgrading lots of images and it's easy enough to import them but then I have to some how change the primary flag on every object with newly imported media. A workaround I've been playing with is to associate the imported medias object to a set. Then batch edit that set to remove all media and the re-import the images one more time. This is not ideal though since ideally I would like to keep the old images as well. Also I'm worried the new media is taking up twice as much space since it's being uploaded twice? Is this correct or are the media files actually deleted once they are removed from their objects?
