Images uploading as binary files, PDFs not processing.

Hello,

We have just finished the initial install of CollectiveAccess on to what will be our first production server. Everything was running smoothly on my test machine for proof of concept (Providence and Pawtucket 1.7.6), but running Providence 1.7.8 on the production machine, I am running into difficulty with the processing of images. Uploading media that I have tested so far is not working, the same files are fine on the test machine. Same with PDFs I can upload and process and view them fine but am riddled with errors on the new build. I am seeing errors with Imagick and some others but everything is installed and configured.

We're running an Ubuntu machine (19.10, will move to 20.04 LTS and stay when released), PHP 7.2, MySQL 5.7. PHP info attached.

When uploading TIF file for drawing:
Notice that image is only recognized as Binary file 1000x1000 px (actual is TIF and ~14000x7500px). I think the initial nonrecognition is the reason for the error with Imagick, but not sure of root cause.

When uploading PDF document:
Main notes are the errors when processing task queue. I note the request to chmod 777 the one directory, is this advisable from a security standpoint? The apache user has 775/664 ownership/access to the entire /var/www/html directories.

Both of these files process just fine on my test build on a different machine (Ubuntu 19.04, Providence 1.7.6, PHP 7.1). Is this a 1.7.8 problem? I did not do 1.7.9 since it's still listed on GitHub as pre-release.

Thanks for your help,
Kyle

  • Removing the php-imagick and php-gmagick modules seemed to resolve the problem of the TIF files not being recognized. Still not sure why this occurs, not sure if it's a version issue or what.

These were the package versions installed. I'd like to use the PHP versions, but if there's too much of an issue then I can skip that I guess.
    Removing php-gmagick (2.0.5~rc1+1.1.7~rc3-4+ubuntu19.10.1+deb.sury.org+20191129) ...
    Removing php-imagick (3.4.4-1+ubuntu19.10.1+deb.sury.org+20191129) ...

Still having this problem when processing the TIF file though.

Is this a permissions issue somewhere or what? I did the chmod 777 to the ../Serializer/HTML directory which did resolve one error but created another. (see next post)

  • Changing the permissions to 777 on the media folder seemed to help resolve the errors when process-task-queue is run, but the images are still not showing in Providence. Only says "Image is being processed" although the process-task-queue has been run without error. But still do we want 777 permission for going live? I'm not sure this is the proper resolution, this at least go rid of the errors, but still have the bug with not images. I can only compare to my test build, but I had 777 permissions on everything there, and don't want to do that for production server.

PDFs are processing completely differently (also incorrectly) as well. Trying to open the image will effectively crash the browser.

Continuing to debug.. Trying to upload both images and PDFs without the task queue enabled works faultlessly, though this is not ideal since it takes forever to upload since files are processed on the fly. I would use this but I don't think this will provide a good user experience for our volunteers using the system once implemented. That's why I am sticking to the use of the task queue.

Running the task queue again I made one change and have tried 3 different ways, two with the same result.
First, I added the login user to the www-data usergroup.
After this running the task queue process as normal (running bin/caUtils process-task-queue):
Runs with the following error and appears as "Image is being processed"

Then trying with sudo (running sudo bin/caUtils process-task-queue) and last trying running as www-data user (running sudo -u www-data bin/caUtils process-task-queue):
    I get the following result:
Runs without errors but files appear like such:

Clicking the thumbnail opens the viewer, but nothing appears.

  • Hi Kyle,

I'm trying to decipher what you're doing, but it's a little hard so forgive me if I ask for repeats on some details. Regarding processing of images (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc.) there are various software libraries CA can use to do the required media transformations. It will use the most capable/high performance library available to it, falling back as needed. GraphicsMagick/Gmagick is the fastest and most reliable. ImageMagick/Imagick is the second choice, then it'll fall back to GD. GraphicsMagick and ImageMagick can handle a variety of formats, including TIFF. GD is limited to GIF, PNG and JPEG.

When you removed Gmagick and Imagick you effectively fell back to GD, which is why TIFFs stopped working. I'd reinstall Gmagick and see how that goes. From your description above it seems like you may have had both Gmagick and Imagick installed at the same time. While in principle there should be nothing wrong with that, in practice it seems to cause random issues and should be avoided.

Also note that the latest GraphicsMagick packages for Linux (v. 1.3.32 and above) break certain function calls within the Gmagick PHP API. There's a fix for this in the develop branch, but it's not in 1.7.8. If you're running GraphicsMagick 1.3.32 or better either switch to the develop branch on GitHub or send me an email (seth@collectiveaccess.org) and I'll send you a patch.

With regards to PDFs, what version of Ghostscript is installed on your server?

    seth

  • Hi Seth, Graphicsmagick and Imagemagick are both installed. I only removed the PHP wrappers. What you say about the latest versions makes sense as to why the PHP wrappers were not working for me since that’s what I had installed.

Like I said in my last post everything is working when the task queue is disabled, but not when it’s enabled. I thought everything was written pretty clear, but I will post a summary of what all actions I have taken when I get home again.

I can double check ghostscript later but it will be the latest version available in apt. I will also post the current Configuration page screenshot and it will help clarify current set up.

    Hi Seth,

    Ghostscript:
gs -v GPL Ghostscript 9.27 (2019-04-04) Copyright (C) 2018 Artifex Software, Inc. All rights reserved.

    Current configuration:

    Ubuntu 19.10
    Providence 1.7.8
    PHP 7.2.26
    MySQL 5.7.26

Most of the server permissions are default, 775/664, owner www-data:www-data. This is where I think the current problem root cause is, explained below.

    Problem summary:

    • Initial problem: Media files will not upload in viewable state (tested TIF and PDF, which will be our primary file types).

    • Actions:

    1. Removed php-imagick (v3.4.4) and php-gmagick (v2.0.5) modules (Imagemagick and Graphicsmagick binaries still installed).
    2. chmod 777 folder ../Serializer/HTML
    3. chmod 777 ../media/../images folder
    • Result: process-task-queue occurs without error, but does not process files. TIF appears as 'Image is being processed' and PDFs render incorrectly and unusable.

    • Next Actions:

    1. Disable Task queue in setup.php. Result: Both TIF and PDF work as they should! However this is slow and we want to use the task queue.
    2. Re-enable task queue.
    3. Add the login user to www-data usergroup.
    • Result: process-task-queue is now running more correctly (before it was finishing too quick to have actually processed anything), but now the following errors occur.
    1. Running process-task-queue as login user, the following error occurs: PHP Warning: fopen(/var/www/html/media/srhaarchive/tilepics/0/77399_ca_object_representations_media_45_tilepic.tpc): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /var/www/html/app/lib/Parsers/TilepicParser.php on line 985
    2. Running process-task-queue as root and as www-data, the following occurs: process-task-queue runs without errors, but thumbnail generated is incorrect and clicking it crashes the browser.

    Conclusion:
Since the files process fine when not using the task queue now, I believe from the plugin side all is well. I think where the problem is now is in file permissions or the caUtils script, but like I said the logged in user is part of the www-data group, but even running as www-data and root, I still have issues. One thing I have noticed is some files uploaded into media and tilepics not as owner www-data:www-data, but as owner login-user:login-user. I tried once changing these files to www-data:www-data, but the files still did not show up in Providence. My next course of action would probably be to try chmod 777 ../media/../tilepics folder but I don't think this is the proper solution (nor was it when I did the same to the ../media/../images folder).

Let me know your thoughts. I try to be as analytical as I can, I'm a Mechanical/Computational Engineer by trade, but figuring out this stuff is a whole new ballgame for me (debugging FEA code and debugging server errors are two different animals!). I try and keep documented all steps I have taken.

  • Hello Seth,

Was wondering if you have had a chance to review my latest post and can give your opinion on actions taken and next actions to take. This is the only issue holding us back right now and I’d like to get it clarified.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • It sounds like permissions issues. Verify that your web server is running as www-data... it might not be.

  • Yes the server is. I had already verified that, that’s why I made it owner of the directories that Providence is running in. It seems that all my problems are related to the caUtils process-task-queue script and/or permissions related to that, I think it may be the script though since we still get these errors when running as root.
  • I really have no idea then. If you want me to look at the server contact me at seth@collectiveaccess.org.

  • Ok. I’ll reach out to you soon regarding that.

    Thanks,
    Kyle
  • Problem Solved. Further debugging deduced that this was a file processing error.

Per Seth's recommendation, we switched to the latest build in the develop branch. For the latest version of Ubuntu (19.10, we were hardware restricted from using the LTS), unless you are willing to compile binaries of old versions of GraphicsMagick/ImageMagick, this is necessary as the older binaries are not available for this version of the OS.
