Problem with UTF-8 metadata.....and php 7.3?

After upgrading to php 7.3 I've been slogging through getting things running again (running git/develop) (Most of the problems I've run into are with continue; changing into: continue 2; in switches)

After many many many many hours (for some reason I get an error 500 with no error log entry...sometimes...othertimes it worked. Not easy to trace this through) I have found that images with utf-8 metadata explode and crash preg_match("!^\X+$!", $vm_v) in function caSanitizeArray() in /app/helper/utilityHelpers.php ~ line 2183.

My "fix" is to add right before:
// if UTF-8 we must convert it....otherwire preg_match() explodes!
if (preg_match("//u", $string)) { $vm_v=mb_convert_encoding($vm_v,"ASCII");}

This seems like a hack.

Any ideas?

  • typo: that should be if (preg_match("//u", $vm_v)) { $vm_v=mb_convert_encoding($vm_v,"ASCII");}
