Sets, Collections, Items taking forever to show up

Our SQL database for our CollectiveAccess instance is 23GB large. Creating a new collection seems to never show up when trying to edit an item and add it to a collection. Typing in the collection name/identifier returns nothing but when you browse collections, it is there; it just doesn't show up in the object editor. Same with adding a bunch of items to a newly created set, performing a search on that set returns zero results, but going to manage sets, I can see the set and all of the items associated with it. Sometimes it takes waiting a few minutes, but most times this just doesn't resolve itself after hours and I am forced to rebuild search index, which takes 3-4 hours.
