Lists: "Require value" without silently selecting default?

I'm currently configuring required/mandatory fields.
I have noticed that when I choose "require value" for lists, the "Not set" option disappears and the user is not informed to make a choice upon saving, but it seems that the default value is simply taken without further notice.

Is this the intended behavior?
My colleague is a bit worried that this may quickly cause un-selected default list-values to slip through as being chosen...

Is there any way to configure a list element in a way so it shows an error if not set?
Thank you very much in advance
